Manitoba talent has netted 24 nominations for the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards (APCMA) this year. The nominees were announced at a press conference on June 27 at Air Canada Park. The winners will be revealed at the eighth annual gala awards show at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg on August 18, 2013 and the invite-only Ohshkii Awards Night at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on August 17.

Singer/songwriter Don Amero landed five nominations, including Best Folk/Acoustic CD for Heart On My Sleeve, as well as Single of the Year, Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year, Best Music Video, and Aboriginal Male Entertainer of the Year. Amero, who won the APCMA for Male Entertainer of the Year in 2012, landed his first JUNO Award nod this year for Heart On My Sleeve, adding to an impressive list of awards, including Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, Canadian Folk Music Awards, and Western Canadian Music Awards, and more.

Also up for five awards is teenage country chanteuse, Ali Fontaine, who is up for Best Country CD and Best Producer/Engineer for Diamond in the Rough, plus Single of the Year, Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year, and Aboriginal Female Entertainer of the Year. Fontaine picked up two APCMAs for her self-titled debut in 2011 and won a Native American Music Award for Best Country Recording in last month.

The list of double nominees includes country newcomer Jade Turner, bluesman Billy Joe Green, Francophone artist marijosée, and singer/songwriter Renée Lamoureux

Other homegrown talent up for awards this year include: Bruthers of Different Muthers (BODM), Desiree Dorion, Tracy Bone, Sierra Noble, and NCI FM’s National Aboriginal Music Countdown, hosted by Winnipeg radio personality, Miss Melissa. Former Manitoba-based rapper Drezus is also up for a pair of awards.

Music legend Ray St. Germain, known to many as "Winnipeg's Elvis, will be honoured this year with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ACPMA gala.

The APCMAs take place during the annual Manito Ahbee Festival, which moves from November to its new summer dates, August 16-21, 2013 in Winnipeg. The awards gala will be broadcast on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.
