About the Indigenous Music Development Program
What is the Indigenous Music Development Program
The Indigenous Music Development Program (IMDP) is one program that Manitoba Music operates. The IMDP is designed to help First Nation, Metis, and Inuit people develop sustainable careers in Manitoba's music industry and runs a number of projects each year to accomplish its main goal. A Manitoba Music membership is required for participation in most projects. Please contact our Indigenous Music Development Manager at imdp@manitobamusic.com if you have any questions.
How did the Indigenous Music Development Program start?
The development of the Indigenous Music Development Program was a function of demand. With a youthful demographic and a vibrant and growing music scene, the Aboriginal community in Manitoba offered an excellent opportunity for Manitoba Music to support growth within Manitoba's music industry. Formerly known as the Aboriginal Music Program, the Indigenous Music Development Program was launched on April 1, 2004.
Does the Indigenous Music Program only allow Indigenous people with legal documentation to participate in its projects?
Indigenous people without legal documentation are still able to participate in projects run by the Indigenous Music Program (for example: Non-Status Indians or individuals who have been adopted by an Indigenous community).
Is the Indigenous Music Development Program only for people living in Manitoba?
The Indigenous Music Development Program's mandate is Manitoba, but we sometimes partner with other organizations and agencies on various initiatives that includes Indigenous participants from across Canada.
What is Indigenous Music Performers Camp?
Indigenous Music Performers Camp is a one-week professional and artistic development project that gives emerging and mid-career Indigenous recording artists a chance to develop their understanding of the music industry along with their ability to succeed in it. The project includes 12-hour days of business workshops, vocal coaching, marketing plan consultations, guitar lessons, and performance coaching. Up to 30 participants from across Canada get the chance to learn from senior artists and industry professionals at a hotel/resort in Manitoba each year. Indigenous Music Performers Camp is made possible through a working partnership with the Music Section of the Canada Council for the Arts. The project was launched in February of 2006 and has seen a number of participants go on to complete albums, play for capacity crowds and rack up award nominations and wins.
Can the Indigenous Music Performers Camp help me get money to record my music?
The Indigenous Music Performers Camp is able to help First Nations, Metis, and Inuit members of Manitoba Music complete their funding applications for sound recording projects. Consultations regarding FACTOR funding programs are available for all people, regardless of membership. See the Funding Programs section for more information.
