The son of an Eritrean Father and Ojibwe Mother from Skownan First Nations Reserve, Sly Skeeta's formative years were marred by the intergenerational effect of the residential school system. As a teen, he battled poverty and homelessness, rather than succumb to the pressures of that life he chose to channel it into his music. He is an advocate for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Children and performs yearly at the "No Stone Unturned" Annual Concert in Winnipeg. His "M.O.M.M.Y" which speaks to the tragic circumstances Indigenous women face was so impactful it was added to the archives of the Parliament of Canada.
He is a voice for the voiceless, He's and advocate for First Nation's youth who are affected by poverty, teen suicide and many other socio-economic issues. Sly Skeeta's music, voice and songwriting have often drawn comparisons to Merkules, Swollen Members and B-Real from Cypress Hill. During his 22 year career, he has performed both domestically and abroad. The most notable milestones are two Cross Canada tours, an 3 city Australian Tour and The Rotterdam Caribbean Festival in the Netherlands as well as the Frybread Festival in Los Angeles and auditioning for a Roc Nation A&R at the Legendary Quad Studios in New York City. These opportunities provided Sly Skeeta with the valuable experience needed to forge ahead in his career
He has released 2 mixtapes, an EP and a full length album, The HeArtist. His latest "Get Hot" Features Juno Award winning Artist and producer 2Rude. He's been interviewed by CBC, APTN, CTV News and Energy 106FM. He is currently working on a new LP that is slated for released in the summer of 2022. This is the most honest and transparent music he's ever made. Its a true testament to his character and heritage. Most recently Sly was nominated for Break Out Artist of 2021 for the International Indigenous Hiphop Awards and in 2022 will be Co-Hosting this event as well!
