We’re very saddened to hear of Curtis ‘Shingoose” Jonnie’s passing.

Mr. Jonnie was a music legend, an inspiration, and a mentor to many. He was a valued member of our Board of Directors in the early 2000s. Throughout his long career, he shared his music and connected with so many, and he worked hard to support Indigenous music communities and elevate Indigenous voices. Among his many accomplishments, he worked with Elaine Bomberry and Buffy Sainte-Marie to create the `Best Music of Aboriginal Canada’ recording category for the JUNO Awards in 1994 and later served as chair of the committee. He was inducted into the Manitoba Music Hall of Fame in 2012 and his song "Silver River" was featured on the acclaimed Native North America compilation in 2015. He will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and his music communities.
