Creative Manitoba’s Careers in the Arts Mentorship offers youth the chance to participate in a group mentorship program run by partnering industry organizations in a choice of four different arts disciplines. Program disciplines are subject to change year to year. Creative Manitoba pledges to make best efforts to prioritize opportunities for people with diverse backgrounds or from equity-seeking individuals and communities, with the goal of 50% of programs holding space for participants who identify as IBPOC or from equity seeking groups.

Youth will have the opportunitity to apply to participate in one of three smaller industry focused groups and/or one larger general music biz group. The three smaller groups are:

  • Songwriting, Sound Engineering + Production lead by Sierra Noble
  • Managing a Professional Music Career lead by Andrea Davis
  • Music Event Planning, Promotion and Content Creation lead by Brendan Kinley

Dates: Programs run between February - May, 2021, specific dates below.

Fees: Programs are free of charge for youth selected through application process.

How to apply:

  • Read through the application form
  • Download the nominator form and have it completed by a teacher or unrelated adult familiar with your work
  • If you are under 18, download the permission form and have it completed by your parent or gaurdian
  • Collect requested materials: resume, samples of your work, etc
  • Fill out the online application and attach all supporting materials. Be sure to include your name on any attached file names.

Music Biz will have two options for participation:
Large-group learning for those interested in the current state of the music industry
Small-group mentorship in a specialized area of interest (3 programs)

Large Group Sessions – If you aren’t sure of what category to sign up for or what kind of mentorship would help you right now, you have the chance to take part in four general music business sessions to learn about various aspects of the music biz. Sessions will include such topics as an Intro to the Music Biz, music placements in TV, Movies, etc, social media & branding, and equity & solidarity work in music.

Small Group Sessions – Participants will have the opportunity to work in small groups with mentors in a specialized area of the music industry of their choosing.
In addition to the small group mentor sessions, participants will take part in the 4 large group sessions to get to know each other and learn about the current state of the music industry.

Small Group #1 – Songwriting, Sound Engineering + Production
Program Mentor: Sierra Noble
Small Group Sessions: Tuesdays 6:30 – 8:00 March 16, March 23, April 6, April 13, April 27 final presentations (+ see above for large group dates and times)
Work with your program mentor to sharpen your songwriting skills, record and produce your own music, and virtually meet with top audio engineers in the city for virtual tours of their studios

Small Group #2 – Managing a Professional Music Career
Program Mentor: Andrea Davis
Small Group Sessions: Wednesdays 6:30 – 8:00 March 17, March 24, April 7, April 14, April 28 final presentations (+ see above for large group dates and times) Whether you’re a musician or someone who is interested in artist management, building a career in the music industry is possible and this program will show you how! Sessions will include learning what goes on behind the scenes of a successful music career, how to get your music noticed, how to apply for funding, and more!

Small Group #3 – Music Event Planning, Promotion, Content Creation
Program Mentor: Brendan Kinley
Small Group Sessions: Thursdays 6:30 – 8:00 March 18, March 25, April 8, April 15, April 29 final presentations (+ see above for large group dates and times)
