Into the Muskeg: On the Hunt for Hidden Indigenous Music Talent in Manitoba

Posted on

Talent shows are a staple in the culture for Indigenous Peoples in Manitoba. Many aspiring singers travel the talent show circuit to compete for cash prizes and to be recognized by music industry professionals. These events are also an opportunity for undiscovered singers to perform for an online audience including Indigenous Elders, industry leaders, and youth. Unfortunately, with the reality of COVID-19, dozens of summer talent showcases have been cancelled.

This week, Manitoba Music is now opening submissions for an online talent search, Into the Muskeg. Up to 20 contestants will be chosen to be judged by a jury of industry professionals. Ten finalists will have their videos air in a mini production that will air on the Indigenous Music Facebook page on June 21, 2020 at 10PM. The top five singers will receive a cash prize and a free one-year membership to Manitoba Music along with a music career consultation with the Indigenous Music Development Coordinator at a later date.
