sākihiwē festival Launches Family Workshops and Songwriter Concerts

The sākihiwē festival returns in June with a series on online outreach events. Now in its 11th year, the festival will have a month of free family workshops and songwriter concerts  featuring Indigenous-identifying performers from many nations. Running every Wednesday, the program will stream online for free from the festival's YouTube channel and Facebook page.

The lineup of artists performing in the songwriter concerts spans the genres and features numerous award-winning acts, including Alexis Lynn, Andrina Turenne, Burnstick, Damase Elis, Don Amero, Drezus, Jay Gilday, Kym Gouchie, Raye Zaragoza, Sandra Sutter, The OB, and William Prince. Each concert will feature three artists sharing their songs in an in-the-round format for the afternoon shows.

Hosted by singer/songwriter Ila Barker, the family workshops will include Inuit throat singing, pow wow fit class, Metis dance lessons, and hand drum tutorials led by throat singing duo PIQSIQ, hoop dancer Shanley Spence, the Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers, and artist Fawn Wood. The workshops are delivered in partnership with the Wahkotowin Strengthening Families Program, which helps youth and their families develop communication skills and connect with traditional knowledge keepers.
