Series Creates Opportunities for Artists and Music Entrepreneurs to Make Connections and Build Their Industry Toolkits

Working in music means balancing creativity with business expertise. To help music entrepreneurs build their industry skills, gain critical knowledge, and make significant career connections, Manitoba Music is launching a new season of its long-running professional development workshops, MusicWorks. The fall season covers essential topics for anyone working in music, as well as focused training for the hip hop and country music communities, and audio production for women and non-binary people.

MusicWorks is made possible by the generous support of the Province of Manitoba, FACTOR through the financial support of the Government of Canada and Canada's private radio broadcasters, and The SOCAN Foundation.

Kicking off September 5 with a two-part session on music funding programs and grant writing, MusicWorks presents experienced music business pros, DIY experts, and pioneering artist entrepreneurs speaking in-depth on key industry topics. MusicWorks offers the opportunity to learn the music business from people on the ground doing the work every day. The series focuses on music business fundamentals that everyone needs to understand and an overarching look at key strategies for developing a solid and cohesive career foundation.

New this year, Manitoba Music will join forces with Creative Manitoba for Arts Fundamentals, a new stream of multi-disciplinary workshops covering crucial areas for anyone working in the arts, including elements of publicity, marketing and monetizing YouTube content, and safer spaces policies. Mentors include the Bell Media’s Alyssa Petru, Paper Cut’s Olivia Michalczuk, Winnipeg Free Press’ Erin Lebar, and more.

The Decipher series of hip hop-focused training continues on September 9, 10, and 12 for Decipher Week, featuring innovative hip hop masterminds with behind-the-scenes knowledge to help local artists and entrepreneurs gain some powerful tools and make important connections to build their music business. Running in conjunction with Bastid’s BBQ, the series will include Skratch Bastid, Rock Paper Management’s Mark Cwajna, Cartel Madras’ Eboshi and Contra, and Zaki Ibrahim.

Winnipeg will be a stop on the road to BreakOut West, which takes over Whitehorse this fall. Manitoba Music will host international industry players from Argentina, Netherlands, UK, Germany, and the US for a two-part session on digital strategies and how to ready your music for the global market on September 30.

Manitoba Music will continue its partnership with artist and producer Joanne Pollock for Equalizer, a series of audio production workshops designed to offer a safe and encouraging environment to women and non-binary people who are interested in learning the ins and outs of audio production. This season will offer practical skills development sessions October 16, 23, and 30.

MusicWorks will hit the road for music business workshops with Manitoba Film & Music in Dauphin and Brandon at the end of October.

Country music will be in the spotlight for the third edition of the Manitoba Country Music Meeting on November 9. Presented in partnership with the Manitoba Country Music Association in conjunction with the Manitoba Country Music Awards, this year’s event offers a day of business development for the country music community, featuring panels and networking opportunities with country music heavy-hitters, as well as an industry showcase at Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club.

In the 2018-19 MusicWorks season, Manitoba Music produced and presented 47 professional development events to 986 participants featuring 80 panelists and mentors and 120 hours of music industry training. The Manitoba music industry is a significant contributor the Manitoba economy with  over 4,300 jobs, $55.1 million in labour income, and $93.8 million in GDP (SoundCheck 2016).

All workshops take place in Manitoba Music’s Resource Centre, 1-376 Donald Street, unless otherwise listed. Space is limited and advance registration is strongly encouraged.
