The sākihiwē festival returns this summer for three days of music and culture featuring Indigenous performers from many nations. Formerly Aboriginal Music Week and presented by aboriginal music manitoba (amm), the newly-named festival runs June 15 to 17 in Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg.

This year’s lineup includes performances by more than 20 Indigenous performers from territories across Turtle Island, from places like Wolastoq First Nation on the east coast and Yellowknife in on the northern coast, and territories further away like New Zealand, as well as many local artists.

Manitoba-based artists set to play this year include award-winning hip hop artist Hellnback, recent Indigenous Music Award winner Desiree Dorion, folk duo Burnstick, electronic duo Akylla, youth-driven hip hop hotbed Studio 393, alt-pop act Sonia Eidse, indie artist Wanda Wilson, roots blues songwriter Richard Inman, singer/songwriter Tara Williamson, and more.

The festival is also teaming up with Jazz Winnipeg to present Manitoba-born, Hamilton based artist Iskwé and emerging local R&B songwriter Sebastian Gaskin at Old Market Square during Jazz Fest's opening weekend.

Other performers include music legend Keith Secola, JUNO-winning act from Nunavut Quantum Tangle, operatically-trained Jeremy Dutcher, and Māori group Māmā Mihirangi & the Māreikura.

The festival bring the music to the people, with performers hitting stages at block parties in three Winnipeg neighbourhoods so that Indigenous families can walk to the concerts. Each block party is free, and features free activities for kids and free barbecue.
