Aboriginal Music Week Celebrates Music Without Borders
The summer of music festivals continues with the sixth annual edition of Aboriginal Music Week. Running August 20-24 in various Winnipeg venues, this year's fest will feature a number of free and tickets shows as well as community celebrations, workshops, film events, industry networking, and more.
AMW will play host to a number of touring acts, including first visits from emcee Tall Paul, violinist Laura Ortman, music producer Astronomar, and hip hop duo Mob Bounce, and guitarist Logan Staats. JUNO Award winners George Leach and Leela Gilday are both set to return, along with pop singer Inez Jasper, prehispanico music creator DJ Javier Estrada, and more.
Homegrown talent also plays a big part on the bill this year, including performances from award-winning rock outfit Eagle & Hawk, Métis fiddlers Darren Lavallee and Melissa St. Goddard, trip hop singer and 2014 Western Canadian Music Award nominee Iskwé, funk-rockers Burnt-Project 1, champion drum group Spirit Sands Singers, rockers The Mosquitoz, country chanteuse Frannie Klein, and more.
AMW is offering some new events and opportunities this year, including two nights of free entertainment at The Cube stage, a big community celebration at the Turtle Island Neighbourhood Centre, music video screenings at the Cinematheque, and a few exclusive music management consultations with Coalition Music's Liam Killeen. The fest will also team up with the Winnipeg Folk Festival for a special noon hour Songwriters Circle at The Cube on August 22.
The festival will also partner with community organizations -- including the Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre, Picnic in the Park, and the Spence Neighbourhood Association -- to produce concerts and events in different neighbourhoods throughout Winnipeg's core aimed at Aboriginal youth.
