Manitoba artists have netted 14 nominations for the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards (APCMA) this year. The nominees were announced at a press conference on June 19 at Portage Place. The winners will be revealed at the ninth annual gala awards show at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg on September 12, 2014 and the invite-only Ohshkii Awards Night at the Winnipeg Art Gallery on September 11.

Vince Fontaine's Indian City landed four nominations for its second album, Colors. The band is up for Best Pop CD, Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year, Best Album Cover Design, and Best Producer/Engineer.

Singer/songwriter and MC Leonard Sumner landed two nominations, including Best Folk/Acoustic CD for his debut, Rez Poetry, and Best New Artist. Sumner, who performed a song at the nominee announcement, won the Winnipeg Arts Council's On The Rise Award earlier this month. This is his first nomination for a music awards show.

Also up for two awards is country chanteuse Desiree Dorion, including Single of the Year for her song "Turn To Me" and Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year for "Mama Got A Shotgun". Both songs are off her album Small Town Stories, which is up for a 2014 Western Canadian Music Award and picked up a nod from The 2014 JUNO Awards.

Hip hop outfit Winnipeg Boyz is another double nominee, picking up nods for Best Group or Duo and Best Rap/Hip Hop CD for Ab Initio.

Other homegrown talent up for awards this year include: Nelson Little for Best Country CD, Jason Lepine for Best Fiddle CD, Jody Thomas Gaskin for Best Flute CD, and Moodie X 2 for Best Pop CD.

The APCMAs take place during the annual Manito Ahbee Festival, which runs September 10-14, 2014 in Winnipeg. The awards gala will be broadcast on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.
