Showcase Opportunity: Native America North in New York City

Manitoba Music is partnering with the Canada Council for the Arts to present another edition of Native America North, a showcase of Canadian Aboriginal artists in New York City during the Association of Performing Arts Presenters conference, January 10 - 14, 2014.

Up to three Aboriginal acts from across Canada who perform any genre of music will be invited to participate. Preference will be given to artists who perform original music, have professional support materials (website, photos, music video), have a professional team (manager and/or agent), and demonstrate momentum (recent awards, recent chart positions, recent tours, etc.).

Participants will receive financial support for three nights of accommodations in New York City. Participants will be expected to attend a series of pre-conference workshops in New York City.

To be considered for a showcase, you must:

  • Be a professional music artist or group of First Nations, Métis, or Inuit ancestry
  • Be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada
  • Have a valid passport and be able to take advantage of international performance opportunities that may arise because of the showcase
  • Have a current or upcoming commercially available EP or full length album
  • Have professional promotional material (photos, website, music videos)
  • Have a manager and/or agent that is also able to travel with you in January

  • Email subject line: “Native America North NYC”
  • Your full name and mailing address
  • 500-word biography of yourself or your group 
  • Download link to three songs in MP3 format
  • Download link to two high resolution promotional photos (no photographs from live performances)
  • Links to your most recent live performance video and your most recent music video on YouTube or Vimeo
  • Name of your manager or agent, their short profile/bio, and their contact information
  • Recent track record (recent awards, recent chart positions, recent tours, etc.)
  • Your stage plot and tech rider
  • Rationale of how this showcase fits into your overall career plans and what you would do to make the most of the opportunity (maximum 1,000 words)

Submissions will be evaluated based on:

  • Music
  • Quality of support materials (website, photos, videos)
  • Strength of team (manager and/or agent)
  • Track record
  • Rationale
