First Round of Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards Yields Eight Wins for Manitoba Acts

Posted on

Manitoba artists picked up eight awards at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards’ first night, aka the Ohshkii Awards Night. Hardware was handed out on November 3 in the Grand Ballroom at Fort Garry Place at an industry event hosted by Lisa Meeches and Ray St. Germain.

Winnipeg’s Most
dominated the night, taking four awards including Best Group or Duo, Best Producer/Engineer, Best Album Cover Design, and Best Music Video for “All That I Know.” The rap outfit still has a chance to pick up awards for Best Rap/Hip Hop CD and Single of the Year at the second night of awards when they hit the MTS Centre on November 4. They won three APCMAs for their self-titled debut last year.

Eagle & Hawk front man Vince Fontaine continued his winning streak for his solo effort, Songs for Turtle Island, which won for Best Instrumental CD. The album has been nominated for eight awards so far this year, including the upcoming Canadian Folk Music Awards and Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, and won a Native American Music Award in October.

Other winners from the first night of awards included Little Hawk for Best Folk/Acoustic CD, Bruthers of Different Muthers for Best Rock CD, and Mark Morrisseau for Best Fiddle CD.

Manitoba acts have eight chances to win at the second, nationally-televised night of the APCMAs, which will name winners in nine more categories. In addition to the nods for Winnipeg’s Most, singer/songwriter Don Amero and newcomer Ali Fontaine are both up for three awards.

The APCMAs are part of the Manito Ahbee Festival, which runs November 2-6 in Winnipeg. Now in its sixth year, Manito Ahbee features a variety of events including an Indigenous Marketplace and Trade Show, International Competition Pow Wow, and an education conference. Running concurrently, the third annual Aboriginal Music Week boasts nine concerts featuring over 30 performers, November 1-5 in various Winnipeg venues.
