The RAS Report - August 2009

Don’t know about you, but I’m liking Winnipeg’s cool weather this summer! Its nice being indoors when the wind is blowing or the rain’s coming down, spending time all snug inside, doing stuff you don’t normally have time to do.

There are many benefits to a cool rainy summer, like more time for TV and movies (yay!), more time for concerts and events (alright!), and less chance to cut the grass (shucks!). It also means I can work without feeling the distracting lure of outside, and might actually finish the August RAS Report before the month is over! In fact, I just did. Here’s the latest news from our clients…

MUSIC

Everyone wants to know… where is Serena Postel?? Well, she’s playing here and there, and busy working on material for her next album. She’s also about to start recording some new tracks. We’ll have more news on Serena soon! (www.serenapostel.com)

Several RAS Creative clients received nomination for the 2009 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, including Eagle & Hawk, Tracy Bone, Jaylene Johnson, and the television series Arbor Live. Previous clients nominated this year are Billy Joe Green and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Winners are selected by voting process, so register online now to vote for your favourites! FILM & TELEVISION

Media Xchange is holding their Showrunner Exchange: TV Drama in Los Angeles from September 12 to 18. The week features the unique opportunity to observe ‘showrunners’ at work, along with prearranged industry meetings with programming and development executives at major US networks, studios and production companies. Registrations are currently being accepted. (www.mediaxchange.com)

Film festivals just can’t get enough of High Life. The movie will screen at Toronto International Film Festival in September, after making its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. It has also been invited to Edinburgh International Film Festival in Scotland, and Film Festival Ghent in Belgium. (www.buffalogalpictures.com) (www.triptychmedia.ca)

This year’s Gemini Awards have recognized many Manitoba productions, including television series Less Than Kind which received 9 nominations! Congratulations to Winnipeg company Buffalo Gal Pictures for their part in co-producing this very funny show. If you haven’t seen it yet, check your TV listings! (www.buffalogalpictures.com)

CBC News at Six Manitoba also received two nominations at this year’s Gemini Awards – Best Newscast and Best News Anchor. Congratulations CBC Manitoba! (www.cbc.ca/manitoba)

RAS CREATIVE NEWS

RAS Creative has been writing creative content for Travel Manitoba’s new website: golfing in Manitoba for couples; fun ways to train in Manitoba for your own winter Olympics; and winter activities in the Whiteshell. You can find these and other stories on the very informative Travel Manitoba website. (www.travelmanitoba.com)

We’ve also been asked to write a number of bios this month, for film crew members, and for an upcoming speaker series. If you need a professionally written bio, we’d love to write it for you! Get in touch.

PROCRASTINATION TIP-OF-THE-MONTH

Did you know that 81% of business people think of their best ideas out of the office?? Yup, that’s an actual statistic I found on an actual website. With that in mind, feel free to leave the office early – or better yet, stay away for an entire day – and see what kind of good ideas come your way.

Cheers!
