Americana Country Folk Indigenous
Take the heartfelt storytelling of Patty Griffin, mixed with the raw authenticity of Zach Bryan and an occasional hint of Sheryl Crow's playfulness, and you've got Canadian Country and Americana artist Jade Turner. A proud member of the Misipawistik Cree Nation, Jade was raised in Northern Manitoba, with an upbringing rooted in the art of storytelling. Her lyrics tell personal tales that range from serious topics to satirical ones, delivered with dynamic vocals that span from gritty and raw to spirited and energetic. Despite a career that seemed nearly impossible due to the absence of Indigenous female representation in mainstream music, Jade credits blues artist Crystal Shawanda as one of her major inspirations. Jade and Crystal teamed up to write "Deadweight," which was released in 2023 and received two awards for Song of the Year and Single of the Year at the Manitoba Country Music Awards that same year. Most notably, Jade became a semi-finalist in the 2024 Top of the Country with Sirius XM competition and recently received the Manitoba Music Kevin Walters Songwriter Award and the SOCAN Vince Fontaine Indigenous Song Award.
